ARIZONA WEATHER - EVERYTHING FROM DESERT TO ALPINE CLIMATES, ALL WITHIN A FEW HOURS DRIVE IN A CAR!

Most people outside of Arizona think of Arizona as cowboys, and sand dunes, and heat, and cacti. We have all of that - and then some! It may come as a surprise that Arizona actually has quite a varied topography, which includes low desert (Phoenix, Yuma), mid desert (Tucson, Wickenburg), high desert (Prescott, Payson, Bisbee, Sedona), plateau highlands (Williams, Page, Holbrook), and alpine mountainous regions (Flagstaff, Greer). The area surrounding Flagstaff, Arizona is home to America's largest Ponderosa Pine Forest. The highest elevation point in the State of Arizona is Humphreys Peak, northwest of Flagstaff, at 12,633 feet above sea level. A popular ski area is in that part of the state. The lowest elevation in Arizona is is the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, at 70 feet above sea level.

One of the things I love the most about living in Arizona is that no more than a two hour drive can dramatically change the weather! Let's say you are lounging around in the Valley of the Sun's perfect winter weather and you get a hankering for some snow. Head North to the Flagstaff area, or East towards Greer, and there's a pretty good chance you're going to find some! Be sure to to bring a change of clothes! I remember many times while living in Flagstaff during the 1990's, watching people driving up from Phoenix's perfect winter weather in their shorts and a tee shirt, and stopping for gas. Talk about some wide eyed people when they stepped out of their cars!!

It is typically 30 to 40 degrees cooler in the alpine areas of the state than in the desert areas of the state. That means that in the heat of the summer months when 105 degrees is common, a two hour drive from Phoenix will transport you into 75 degree temperatures! And those areas include beautiful green grassy meadows and awesome Ponderosa Pine forests!
I know it seems amazing, but keep in mind that the general rule of thumb
is 5 degrees cooler per 1000 ft of elevation climb. Flagstaff, at 7000 ft elevation, is 6000 ft higher than Phoenix! Maybe that's why Arizona is known as the wild, wild west!!!
